چکیده
The Cornell electron-positron storage ring (CESR) is a symmetric e+e− collider located on the Cornell University campus in Ithaca, NY. For almost 30 years, the accelerator has been running in the Upsilon energy region from √ s = 9-11 GeV , providing the accompanying detector, CLEO, with data to produce results on B, Υ, τ , charm, and 2-photon physics. Roughly 2 years ago, the accelerator was modified with the addition of wiggler magnets to allow it to run in the √ s = 3-5 GeV charmonium energy region. CLEO 1 is a standard 4π e+e− magnetic spectrometer. In its latest configuration, called CLEO-c, it consists of inner and main drift chambers for charged particle tracking, a CsI electromagnetic calorimeter, and a Ring-Imaging Cherenkov detector (RICH), all enclosed in a 1 T solenoidal magnetic field. The charged particle momentum resolution is 0.6% at 1.0 GeV /c and the photon energy resolution is 4% at 100 MeV . Paticle identification is done using both the RICH and dE/dx measurements in the drift chambers. Muon chambers interspersed in the magnet iron outside the solenoid complete the detector.

New Results From CLEO and BES
Latest experimental results from BES in the charmonium mass region, and those from CLEO in the bottomonium and charmonium spectroscopy are reviewed. 1. Preamble I am going to talk about new results from CLEO and BES, two detectors half a world apart, trying to catch the same particles. CLEO used to do physics in the b-quark region ( √ s = 9 − 11 GeV). It has many credits in bottomonium (bb̄) spe...
متن کاملHeavy Quarkonia Results from CLEO
Heavy quarkonium cc̄ (cc̄ charmonium, bb̄ bottomonium) provides the best means of testing QCD, both the validity of perturbative QCD and potential models, and lattice QCD calculations. Bottomonium is better than charmonium, both because it has smaller relativistic problems (< v/c >≈ 0.1 versus ≈ 0.2) and smaller coupling constant (α ≈ 0.2 versus ≈ 0.35), but much less high precision spectroscopic ...
متن کاملBottomonium and Charmonium at CLEO
The bottomonium and charmonium systems have long proved to be a rich source of QCD physics. Recent CLEO contributions in three disparate areas are presented: (1) the study of quark and gluon hadronization using Υ decays; (2) the interpretation of heavy charmonium states, including non-cc candidates; and (3) the exploration of light quark physics using the decays of narrow charmonium states as a...
متن کاملCharmonium, Bottomonium, Bc Mesons from Classical Pure SU(3) Yang-Mills Configurations
A generalized Faddeev-Niemi ansatz for the gluon field is discussed. In its simplest parametrization, the ansatz allows a solution of the classical SU(3) Yang-Mills equations and from these solutions a confining potential for heavy quarkonia is defined. The investigation of charmonium and bottomonium proves that the potential is able to reproduce the spectra at the level of 3% for charmonium an...
متن کاملBottomonium and Charmonium Results from Cleo
The study of hadronic transitions among heavy quarkonium states provides important tests for non-perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) 1. In the multipole expansion, 2 hadronic transitions among heavy quarkonium states proceed by emission and hadronization of soft gluons. The non-relativistic nature of the bottomonium system and the richness of the spectrum of bound states make it an excell...
